Mac mini and HD resolutions

HdoutputHD Beat has a post that describes the resolutions that are supported in the new Intel Macs.  It looks like the new Macs determine the resolutions supported by TVs with EDID.  The thing that I find most interesting is that these Macs support interlaced resolutions.  This is the first time that I have seen PCs support non-progressive resolutions.

  1. I assume you didn't know that Amiga supported Interlaced Display Modes? Not HD, but most definitely interlaced SD Pal and NTSC, and possibly SECAM modes.
I know, because it used to annoy me that these modes were the only way to get decent resolutions on some monitors/tvs, but they flickered to buggery.

  2. I'm surprised at the lack of a few "key" resolutions. Many 50" plasma displays and LCD projectors are 1366x768 progressive. This list doesn't have anything that would be a 1:1 mapping on my plasma monitor... I'm not even sure if it supports interlaced formats other than 480i and 1080i.
I also think that the abundance of interlaced modes might be because of the integrated video chipset they're using. Doing interlaced takes half the memory bandwidth, so you leave more bandwidth for the system processor. Going with integrated video is a really unfortunate choice for something thats supposed to be a media PC.
