Downloadable content for SOCOM 3

Paul Westbrook | 22 February, 2006 19:42

Next month, Sony is going to make some new content available for SOCOM 3.  This will include new maps for online play.  The map pack will be $5.99.

I assume that this will use the online account, that was required to be created, when registering the for the online SOCOM component.

One interesting thing that I didn't realize is that SOCOM 3 can use any USB Mass Storage device for storing this downloaded content.  I wonder if Sony will allow USB thumb drives to be used instead of their memory cards.

USB extension cable for PS2 headset

Paul Westbrook | 21 December, 2005 17:22

A couple of weeks ago, I bought some extension cables to allow me to play SOCOM 3 while sitting on the couch instead of sitting on the floor.  The extension cable for the controller worked perfectly.  The problem I had was with the extension cable for the headset.

The headset connects to the PS2 through the USB port.  I bought a standard USB 2.0 extension cable.  When I connected the cable, the headset wasn't recognized by SOCOM 3.  I think that the headset is just using USB 1.1.  I would assume that you could use a USB 2.0 cable for USB 1.1 devices.

SOCOM 3

Paul Westbrook | 14 October, 2005 19:08

On Thursday, I picked up a copy of SOCOM 3.  I really like the game.  This new version has several new features

  1. Better graphics
  2. Larger maps
  3. 16:9 screen
  4. Customizable weapons
  5. Drivable vehicles

It definitely is an improvement over SOCOM 2, but there are some downsides to it.

  • When enabling Progressive scan mode, the graphics appear to be dithered
  • The controls for driving the vehicles are a little strange.  R1 to drive forward, and L1 to go backwards.  Also using the right analog stick changes the view, so it gets a little confusing for driving.
  • In order to join or create a Clan, you need to verify an account with a credit card.

Descent for Free

Paul Westbrook | 07 September, 2005 20:54

I just saw that Descent is now available as an open source game, that is available on OSX, Windows and Linux.  I spent a lot of time in the past playing this game.

Free games

Paul Westbrook | 27 August, 2005 20:19

I just saw this article on CNET.com.  They list 10 free full featured games that can be downloaded.  I used to play Marathon a while ago, and it is neat to be able to download the games.

The versions that are available, for Mac OS, is only Mac 9 applications.  So if you want to run this on Mac OS X, you will have to use Classic.  Bungie open  sourced the code to Marathon in 2000, and there has been work to continue development on it.  You can download a Windows, Mac OS X, or Linux client from this project.

Ear Force AXT

Paul Westbrook | 20 August, 2005 12:15

Axt Full MicOne of my friends sent me this link to this new headset.  I mentioned before that I want to get a headset that would allow me to play SOCOM II with with headphones.

It looks like the Ear Force AXT is a headset that is meant to be used with an Xbox.  it has a RCA input to connect to a Xbox or a receiver, and a "mic adapter" to plug into the Xbox communication module for the communication.

This could be used for playing SOCOM II on a PS2.  If the "mic adapter" is a standard headset connector, I should be able to use it.  I use the DATEL GameTalk Headset, and this provides a USB adapter for standard headset.  Is the Xbox headset compatible with cell phones?

Planarity is a pretty fun puzzle game.

Gaming headset

Paul Westbrook | 28 May, 2005 19:52

4621628861772595Tritton has come out with surround sound headphones, that include a built-in microphone. These headphones have four drivers in each of ear pieces, used to give the surround sound effect. These look like they would be good for online games.

Unfortunately, these only have a USB interface, so they require a Windows driver installed in order to use them. I would love to see one of these compatible with the PlayStation 2. When I play SOCOM II, I usually wear headphones on top of the headset, so I don't wake the kids or my wife up. This gets pretty uncomfortable after a while. I would love it if someone would make a headphone that integrated a microphone. Then the cable would have two ends. One with a headphone plug to connect to the main sound source, and then another mini jack plug to connect to the headset port.

SOCOM II

Paul Westbrook | 19 February, 2005 18:27

My wife bought me SOCOM II along with the PlayStation 2 Network adapter and a USB Playstation headset. I was up to 4am on Friday playing this game. I think that I am going to enjoy it. I haven't plugged in the headset yet, so I don't know how the game play will be with that. I have heard that the voice recognition is not the best.

I did try playing online, and when I did, I got my butt kicked. I am going to have to practice some more before I go online again.

Gran Turisimo web site

Paul Westbrook | 03 February, 2005 14:06

A few days ago, Autoblog mentioned the web site for Gran Turismo 4. This looks like a great game, and an improvement over Gran Turismo 3.

The animated spectators during the rally races look great, but the feature that I am looking forward to most is the Network play. The web site currently states that it is LAN, but I am hoping that they will extend it to Internet play

Duke Nukem 3D for Mac OS X

Paul Westbrook | 01 December, 2004 21:52

It looks like Ryan Gordon, who brought the last couple of Unreal Tournament games to the Mac, has ported Nuke Nukem 3D to Mac OS X. This installer will install the shareware version, or the commercial version if you have the PC "Atomic Edition" or the MacSoft version.

Now I can waste more time, playing this game that I used to play a long time ago.
