Folding@Home, PS3 and Energy Consumption

Paul Westbrook | 30 April, 2007 23:32

PS3 owners can run a Folding@Home client on the game console.  (As on March 23rd, PS3s were contributing 338 teraflops.)

According to the PS3 frequently asked questions page, the power consumption of the PS3 running the Folding@Home client, is 200 Watts.

This is the main reason that I don't run these clients, even though I would love to participate.  We are trying to reduce our energy consumption, so I wouldn't want to leave a 200 watt device running all of the time.

I do wonder how efficient the PS3 (flops/watt) is compared to other types of hardware.

Twitter plugin

Paul Westbrook | 28 April, 2007 02:50

I am interested in integrating LIfeType into various services for sending notifications.  I just whipped up a plugin to post "tweets" to Twitter when a new post is added.

Here is the wiki page for the Twitter plugin.  The plugin uses the class provided by David Billingham.

This is the type of thing that I think Twitter is perfect for: automatic notification of various processes.

Memory problem with securityd

Paul Westbrook | 27 April, 2007 13:13

For the past couple of days, my computer has been having problems when trying to update access to my Keychain when an application has been updated.  If I approve the update, the securityd process starts eating up memory.  I have seen this process using as much as 1.7GB.

This post has a description of this problem, and the solution.  The problem is that the CodeEquivalenceDatabase was corrupt.

Better Gmail

Paul Westbrook | 17 April, 2007 00:03

Better Gmail is a Firefox Add-on that adds several features to Gmail.  Some of these include:

  • Icons for emails that have attachments
  • Reminders when sending a message that refers to an attachment, but doesn't include one
  • Label colors
  • Saved searches

It's All Text!

Paul Westbrook | 16 April, 2007 23:03

slacy mentioned the It's All Text Firefox Add-on.  This allows you to use an external application to edit/add the text in any html text area.

When using this on Mac OS X, you need to set the "Editor" to /usr/bin/open.  This will open your configured editor for text files.

Mailplane

Paul Westbrook | 16 April, 2007 22:02

Mailplane looks like a cool application that integrates Gmail into a Mac OS X application.  This application uses Webkit, for displaying the Gmail interface.

One down side of  Mailplane, you can only access your mail when you are connected to the network.  Though, one benefit is that you don't have to worry about synchronizing filters or labels between the web interface and Mail.app.

Here is a video walkthrough of some of the features:

fotowoosh

Paul Westbrook | 15 April, 2007 23:43

Fotowoosh is a pretty cool future web service that will convert a photograph into a 3D scene.  It does this by creating a 3-D model and then mapping the image to the model.
